What a challenge it turned out to be getting Iain into a big boy bed. Before we left for Thanksgiving we had a brand new full size mattress and box spring delivered to replace Iain’s crib mattress. When we purchased Iain’s crib we chose a bed that we thought would look ok to a teenage kid as well as a younger kid…so he could use it for a long time.
Yesterday we set to the task of setting up the new bed. We took apart the crib bits, and assembled the side rails to the bed. All went well until we tried to put the slats on the frame. They were the wrong size, about 2 inches too big. This made the bed basically unusable. However, even if the slats had fit correctly we would not be able to use the bed. I think maybe the bed was designed for use with a mattress and no box spring, or at the very least not as big a set as we bought for him (again with the idea in mind that it would last until he went to college). When you put both onto the frame (without the slats) the top of the bed was about 4 feet off of the floor and about 1 foot from the top of the headboard. WAY to high for a baby, or anyone for that matter. The frame sits up VERY high on the headboard, and while good for underbed storage, it sucks for sleeping.
The mattress and box spring are now on the floor, and we will need to head back to the furniture store to find him another bed frame. Iain did sleep in his new bed last night, with new bear footprint sheets. He woke up in the middle of the night with a bit of a nightmare, but I don’t think it was related. I slept with him for a while to calm him down…much more comfortable now.
